Can Dogs Eat Eggs?

Katherine Allen

Eggs are one of the most common foods dog owners ask about — and for good reason. They’re inexpensive, easy to find, and packed with nutrients.

The short answer is yes. Dogs can absolutely eat eggs.

The longer answer is that, like most foods, how they’re used matters.

Why Eggs Are Good for Dogs

Eggs are a nutrient-dense whole food that provide high-quality protein along with several vitamins and minerals dogs need. They naturally contain nutrients like vitamin A, B vitamins, selenium, and healthy fats that support skin, coat, and muscle health.

Because eggs are so digestible, they’re often well tolerated even by dogs with sensitive stomachs.

For many fresh feeders, eggs become a simple way to add variety to a dog’s diet without introducing a completely new protein.

Raw vs Cooked Eggs

Both raw and cooked eggs can be fed to dogs.

Cooked eggs are the simplest option for many households. Scrambled or lightly cooked eggs are easy to digest and remove any concerns people may have about raw egg handling.

Raw eggs are also commonly fed in fresh diets. Dogs are biologically equipped to handle raw animal foods, and whole raw eggs are part of many prey-model feeding approaches.

If feeding raw eggs, basic food safety still applies. Use fresh eggs, store them properly, and handle them the same way you would raw eggs for your own meals.

What About Eggshells?

Eggshells are mostly calcium and can be used as a calcium source when meals contain boneless meat.

However, they should be finely ground before feeding so they’re easier to digest and distribute evenly in food.

If your dog already receives calcium through raw meaty bones or a balanced diet, adding eggshell isn’t necessary.

How Much Egg Can Dogs Eat?

Eggs are best used as part of a balanced diet, not the entire meal.

For many dogs, one egg occasionally mixed into meals is perfectly reasonable. Larger dogs may tolerate eggs more frequently, while smaller dogs should receive smaller portions.

Like any food, moderation matters.

When Eggs Might Not Work

Although eggs are generally safe, some dogs can be sensitive to them. If itching, digestive upset, or ear irritation appears after introducing eggs, remove them and try again later to see if the reaction repeats.

Food sensitivities are individual, and eggs are no exception.

The Bottom Line

Eggs are a simple, nutrient-dense food that many dogs tolerate well. Whether served raw or cooked, they can be a useful addition to a fresh diet when used in moderation and within a balanced feeding plan.
