5 Things I Wish I Knew Before I Started Raw Feeding
Share
So you’re thinking about switching your dog to raw food.
Or maybe you already did and now your kitchen looks like a butcher shop, your dog’s poop is a mystery, and you’re googling “can dogs eat raw turkey necks at 2am.”
Hi. Welcome. You’re my people.
I’ve been doing this long enough now to tell you: raw feeding is absolutely worth it... but I made every mistake in the book getting here. And if I can help one other dog mom skip the freezer freakouts and chicken bone anxiety? Then this post did its job.
Here’s what I really wish someone had told me upfront:
1. You Don’t Need to Be a Pet Nutritionist
Seriously. There are people online with spreadsheets, macros, and vitamin calculators that will scare you right back to kibble.
You don’t need to go full biochemist. You just need balanced meals, smart variety, and a little common sense.

2. Freezer Space = Your Best Friend (and Worst Enemy)
You will absolutely overestimate how much chicken you can fit in your fridge.
I now own a separate freezer. Do I regret it? Not even a little.
Also: get storage containers you actually like using. I keep these ones in my shop because they don’t leak and stack like champs.
3. Frozen Goat Milk is Basically Crack for Dogs
IYKYK.
Pop it in a cute mold, freeze it, and boom — instant enrichment + probiotic boost.
My dogs lose their minds over goat milk + blueberries in the frog mold. It’s weirdly satisfying.
4. Not All Bones Are Safe
Yes, dogs are carnivores. No, that does not mean your 8-lb gremlin should be gnawing on a beef knuckle the size of her face.
Stick to soft, edible bones like:
-
Chicken necks
-
Duck feet
-
Pork ribs (for experienced chewers)

5. Some Days You’ll Forget to Thaw the Food
And on those days, you will stare at your frozen block of meat like it personally betrayed you.
This is when your emergency stash of frozen treats, raw-friendly toppers, or Lazy Dog Mom™ “oh crap” tips will save the day.
(I may or may not have written an entire guide called “When You Forget to Thaw the Damn Food” — coming soon.)
Final Thoughts:
Raw feeding isn’t a trend. It’s not a cult. It’s just feeding your dog real food — and figuring it out one meal at a time.
If you’ve got questions, check out the guides, browse the tools I use daily, or shoot me a message. You’ve got this. And if not? I’ve probably already messed it up, fixed it, and written about it.
